Feeling Good is Priceless – Help is Here!!

Since COVID 19, have you been having trouble taking care of yourself?  Have you gained weight, found yourself eating too many treats and sat in front of your TV or computer screen a lot?  This can be especially bad for someone living with health issues like diabetes, kidney or heart problems.

The U.P. Diabetes Outreach Network (UPDON) is working with the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan (NKFM) to offer a FREE online program, Better Choices, Better Health, that will help get you back on track!! It is a 6-week program that you can sign up for anytime. Then just go to the site on your phone or computer when it works best for you – read short weekly lessons and share what works for you and get help on what problems you are having from others in your online group via a message board.   Set a small goal for yourself each week – something you want to do like choose vegetables more often as snacks, take a short walk after dinner 3 times this week or set up reminders on your phone to take your medication. If you need help, the leader and other group members are there for you. Ann Constance, MA, RDN, CDCES, FADCES , the Director of UPDON helped train leaders for one of the Better Choices, Better Health programs when it first started and here is what she has to say “This is one of the best and easiest to use online health programs that I have ever been a part of. It was exciting to see group members make lifestyle changes, improve their health and feel better. They also helped each other and celebrated successes together.”

Join Better Choices, Better Health TODAY– there are a limited number of FREE slots available. You won’t want to miss out on this great offer to take better care of your health so that you can do the things in life that are important to you.  Just go to https://www.nkfm.org/communities-families/better-choices-better-health to sign up!!  Call UPDON at (906) 273-1120 or NKFM at 800-482-1455 for more information.

Good day fellow Lions,
Hope this email finds you all well. Sending you our latest diabetes awareness fliers that you can share in your clubs, in your network or on social media. D.A.D continues to create awareness of this chronic disease that continues to rise daily and we need your continued help in getting this important message out to….”Know your Risk – Take the Test”!

A key success factor of D.A.D has been our relationships with our partners and NMU has been awesome to collaborate with….Lion Chris Smith and I have been inspiring young NMU students about the Lion’s and we even had one student wrote a nice story on NMU’s blog about his experience with the Lion’s. If you are not able to scan the QR Code please click the below link and take a look at the great job that NMU”s IT Department did in creating this website Diabetes | Center for Rural Health.

Solidified a new relationship and partnership with MTU (Michigan Tech University) and tomorrow Anita Cater from MSU Extension and I have our first Zoom Meeting with
Carolyn Duncan, PhD, professor of kinesiology and integrative physiology to discuss Tai Chi for Diabetes at the MTU University!

We also just started our very first Tai Chi for Diabetes class with Baraga County Memorial Hospital via Zoom and it’s just the beginning of great things to come in District 10. D.A.D grant provided scholarships to train and certify Tai Chi for Diabetes instructors and we will be offering ALL Lion’s members FREE Tai Chi for Diabetes classes for any Lion’s member that lives with this horrific disease. They can also include their caregiver and or family members as well.

I was also informed by Pam Dove MS, RDN, CDE that she filled her Diabetes Prevention class with 10 participants and that’s very exciting news…..Thank you ZOOM!
