Single District 10 Lions

Michigan's Upper Peninsula

Single District 10 Lions - Michigan's Upper Peninsula

Committee News

I am proud to share a new District 10 Lions Childhood Cancer Landing Page and Fundraiser with all of you.  Go to  uplionsserve.org  which will take you directly to the landing page for the fundraiser called: I Trekked the U.P. The motivation for this project came as I was connecting with families fighting cancer and realized that they were at least a generation behind me.  Childhood Cancer is planning for the future and we hope to reach out to all community members, not only Lions, with resources, information, stories and fundraising projects.  The number of families we have found in the U.P. is growing and continued fundraising will be necessary to help those who need us.  We are using this social media as a tool in addition to mail, TV, newpapers and radio.   This is the future of communication, not only because of Covid, but it is just progress into the future.

I am seriously begging you to help Childhood Cancer move this initiative forward and acheive success.  We need to bring this information to more eyes and ears and this can only be done with everyone’s help!  Share  uplionsserve.org with other Lions, friends, family and people in your communities.  We can show them what lionism is all about, get fit by Trekking the U.P. and helping kids at the same time!

The landing page is very easy to navigate!
  • Hover over areas at the top How We Help and see the stories about the Marquette Can Drive with pictures, and about Northwood’s AirLife Line with pictures of one of our families.
  • Scroll down and see a few stories about our Heros.
  • You can design your own Trekking and then print off the Track Sheet to keep track of your activity.
  • Take a friend for a walk, get pledges for your hiking, walking, snowshoeing or skiing.  Afterwards, you can also click on the FB button and post pictures of what you did and where you Trekked and also see what others have done.  You can also send me your pictures and I can post them on the Instagram page.   And please, please, please have fun!
  • Consider a donation and remember that a dollar can make a difference.  If you donate $25 or more, you will recieve a Childhood Cancer mask and bandana.  All of this can be done at the bottom of the page.
  • Please hover over our partner’s icons and you will be directed to their websites.
  • There is also a direct link to our District 10 website, so others can learn more about Lions and what we do.

In closing, I want to share a quote by a man, that over a hundred years ago created the service movement, Melvin Jones.  He said, “You can’t get far until you start doing something for somebody else“.  Upon this quote, our Lions motto, “We Serve” emerged.  The U.P. Lions are going to continue to serve our communities more than ever.  This is our first step to move the District 10 Lions into Future Servership.  We have nothing to loose and everything to gain and we will make a difference for not only our communities in this day and age, but for years to come.  I think Lion Melvin Jones would be proud of the District 10 Lions!

I am willing to do a zoom presentation for your club or any other community organization, so please contact me via email, text, or phone call.

Best Regards,
Lion Chris Smith

I Trekked the U.P.
Did you know that most families with a child battling cancer have to travel outside of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan for treatment?  Our new fundraiser, I Trekked the U.P., benefits families fighting Childhood Cancer.  We aim to provide help with gas, food, travel, accomodations, and more through your donations.  Trek outside for a snowshoe session, a run on the treadmill, or a simple daily walk.  Then track those miles/hours/steps and donate based on what you achieved!  Visit our website to learn more about our cause:   uplionsserve.org

Lions, please help us spread the word!  Tell other Lions, tell your family and friends!  Together, we can make a difference!
The children and families THANK YOU!

Lions Clubs gift cards for Childhood Cancer
Hello Fellow Lions!
I am resending three flyers that were sent out a while back in hopes that you will all reread them and give them consideration.  While you’re in the holiday giving mode, please think of donating electronic gift cards to Kids Kicking Cancer to help our childhood cancer families.  They provide valuable help for these families who struggle with expenses, even if it’s just for the little things.

Also, Kids Kicking Cancer, Maggie’s Wigs 4 Kids and Camp Quality are always in need of donations.  The attachment with a list provides ideas for these.

The last attachment is a pattern for making port pillows to be used during a child’s treatment or even under a seatbelt for comfort.  They are VERY simple to make!

As we enter the dark and dreary days of winter, why not spend a little time to aid those families in need.  The children also need hats following hair loss from treatment.  These can be knitted from soft baby yarn in all kids’ sizes.  In addition, homemade pillowcases in graphic, fun, kid prints are welcomed.  If you belong to a sewing or knitting group these could be a group project.  ALL help will be appreciated!
LET”S ALL DO OUR PART!

The childhood cancer program will take care of getting the items where they need to go, either by mail or driving down to deliver or meet a contact.  You can send items to me, Chris Smith via mail or I can meet you, or I will drive and pick them up if you have a bundle of things.

Patridge Creek Farms

Governor Joe Maki; 1st VDG Jim Svinicki and 2VDG Gretchen Preston (along with Lion Floyd) were privileged to have a special tour of the gardens of Partridge Creek Farms in Ishpeming. Lion Dan Perkins provided the tour and the group was accompanied by Rep. Sara Cambensy. Partridge Creek Farms is a District 10 supported project crossing two Lions signature services – Environment and Hunger.

Lion Dan and Partridge Creek Farms received a special commendation from the Michigan Legislature presented by Rep Cambensy. They also presented future plans for a very large project on the site where the presentation was done. Please check out this interesting and innovative project at their website partridgecreekfarm.org and consider what your club may do to help support this!

Lions of SD10 safely attending a Cabinet meeting during the COVID pandemic!

International President Dr Jung-Yul Choi administered the oath of office virtually to incoming District Governor’s from all over the world including our own District Governor Joe Maki. This oath is typically done at the International Convention which would have been in Singapore this year but due to Covid-19 was cancelled. We wish Governor Maki the very best in the coming year.

REQUEST FOR DONATIONS

You may or may not be aware there is a great group of individuals that banded together to form a group called “Masks in Delta County”.  They have a presence on Facebook and at the writing of this document have 504 members of our Delta County community.  This group is gathering fabric, interfacing, elastic and the other items needed to make masks.  There are individuals cutting & sewing hundreds of masks to be donated to those on the front line.  Coordinating this group is Jill Spencer.  As of 4/7/2020 over 1,000 of these masks have been delivered to various locations including 600 to St Francis Hospital in Escanaba.

Bill (Gladstone LION) & Cathi Sjoquist made a visit today to Dan Perkins (Ishpeming LION) who is cutting metal nose strips.  The Gladstone LIONS are making a $300 donation to Dan Perkin’s group to offset these 3,000 metal strips.

I am sending this request for your LION’S Club to consider a donation to the “Masks in Delta County” group.  They will be using your donation for additional materials needed for many more masks.  They have volunteers ready and waiting for more cutting, sewing and assembly assignments.

There is already a huge shortage of elastic around the country so in addition to monetary donations they also request donations of elastic, nylons, tights & interfacing that can be used for these maska.  Drop off locations for these items in Delta County are the service desks at Pat’s Festival Foods in Gladstone, Joe’s Store in Rock & Elmer’s in Escanaba.

If your club or an individual in your club wishes to make a monetary donation please make the check payable to Jill Spencer and send to Joseph Maki, SD 10 LIONS 1st VDG, PO Box 309, Gladstone, MI  49837 who will handle the check distribution.

If you have additional questions, please contact Colleen Maki – President, Bay de Noc LIONS Club 906-280-4365.

Yours in LIONISM
Joseph L Maki, Single District 10 1st Vice District Governor

Membership Packets
As Global Membership Chair, I request packets from the International.  When new members are posted on the International site, we print out certificates and letters from the Governor for both sponsor and new member.  These are then mailed to the secretary or president of the club, and usually arrive within two days.
The packets also include information on Lions, a discount certificate from the Lions store, pins for both new member and sponsor, and a pen for the new member.
If you would like to receive the packets early, just email wnrowe@charter.net with the name of the new member, the name of the sponsor, and the date of the induction.
