Just another tidbit of a wonderful experience by a Lion who went on a well deserved Caribbean cruise with a friend. This Lion and her friend were in port on an island and after enjoying a fabulous zip line experience, had a few more hours to enjoy before having to head back to the ship. They asked a store keeper how to go about hailing a taxi to drive them around. The store keeper responded, “No, just a minute, I will take care of you”. The store keeper left the store to return just a moment later and within a few minutes someone arrived to take them for a ride. As introductions and discussions commenced, it was announced that their driver was a Lion from that island and at that same moment our Lion exclaimed, “I am too!” From there a new friendship was born. The Island Lion gave them the grand tour driving them around the entire island, narrating and visiting places. Even staying with them and their possessions when they went to the beach to enjoy the sand and water for 45 minutes, but it was still 45 minutes. Whether you look at it as 45 minutes with the Island Lion staying with them the whole time, the 45 minutes that they were able to enjoy on the beach, or the short time of only having 45 minutes to enjoy the beach before having to head back to the ship. The Island Lion did what all of us Lions should be doing –whether we are Lions or not. The Island Lion did not know our Lion and vice versa, but we (Lions) are there to always serve in one capacity or another. This is an experience neither of these Lions will ever forget and you may think this is the end, but actually it is the beginning –because these Lions will be keeping in touch with each other.
Thank you for reading this and letting me bring a few heartfelt words of wisdom. Be true, encourage others and be a Lion.
It’s About Humanity
In light of the numerous disasters occurring in this world and on our planet, we as “Lions” need to step up even more in this time to continue in our efforts in serving humanity. Humanitarianism (like Lionism) is defined as an ethic of kindness, benevolence, and sympathy extended universally and impartially to all human beings. “We Serve” is a motto towards and an extension of what we do for humanity. How can anyone see that as less, especially if you are a Lion? Someone who specializes in Philanthropy is someone who has the love of humanity, in the sense of caring and nourishing, it involves both the benefactor in their identifying and exercising their values, and the beneficiary in their receipt and benefit from the service or goods provided.
At a recent cabinet meeting I verbalized the fact that as “Lions” we need to “OWN IT”! The point I was trying to make was that when I wore the Lions Emblem on the left side of my jacket – where it is positioned due to that placement being located closest and over the heart. The connection of the Heart and the Lions Emblem in its placement is why we need to ‘OWN IT’! PDG Lion Bill Whippen, (who is letting God know about Robert’s Rules of Order -good luck with that one Bill), was instrumental in how I developed as a Lion. He said the word K.I.S. and explained that it means: Keep It Simple. For me, that was in learning how to speak in front of a crowd. In respect to K.I.S. – I thought of K.O.S.S., it doesn’t sound as good as K.I.S., but it’s the best I could do. K.O.S.S. in my perspective, stands for Know it, Own it, Show it, Share it. The ‘it’ is Lions! Know what Lions stand for and realize the impact we have for humanity throughout the world. Own who you are as a Lion, stand behind the emblem you are wearing over your heart and be proud! Show what Lions do, how we do it and how we come together for humanity and in practice of Philanthropy. Share information about Lions, what your club accomplished, who it benefits and why you want to share that experience with them. If you have a personal account of knowing someone who benefitted from a Lions donation and/or a project we support, then you know the feeling and the strength that come from within when you let others know ‘how it felt for you’ and ‘how it felt for that person who benefitted from it’. You know, so why hold it in and not share that experience that touched your soul and your heart – exactly where that Lions Emblem is located on your chest. Radiating the warmth that we as Lions have been spreading all over the world for over 100 years. Obviously, Lions withstood the test of time and are continuing into the next 100 years.
